5 Ways to Spice Up Your Dating Profile

Making a dating app profile can be stressful. From selecting the right pics to writing the funniest-most-interesting bio of all time, it can be easy to put a lot of pressure on yourself to make everything perfect. We’re not going to lie to you and say it’s no big deal – your profile is the first peek into who you are as a human, and some people really do make a decision about someone within seconds of landing on their profile!

Your dating profile is important, but creating it doesn’t have to be a miserable experience. Instead of letting the importance of your profile overwhelm you, take it one step at a time and focus on a few key things that will really help you stand out. Here are a few tips on how you can easily set up or spice up your dating profile

1. Your opening pic needs to be straight *fire*

If you’re not an aspiring influencer, chances are you don’t just have a ton of good selfies or solo pics sitting around for you to pick from, and that’s okay! But what we’re not going to do is that close-cropped blurry BS where you can still see your friend’s shoulder in the corner. It’s important that you take the time to capture that perfect opening dating profile picture, because that’ll go a long way in making a good first impression online! Plus portrait mode is a game changer, so you really don’t have an excuse anymore. Beg, borrow, steal, and make it happen. Plus, this is what friends are for – if they’re not here to make you look good, what are they even doing?

2. Your pictures should be a curated view of your life – use them to showcase your hobbies and interests!

There’s only so much someone can learn about you from your dating profile before they decide which way to swipe. Outside of the short bio, the best way for someone to get to know you is to tell a story through the pictures you choose. Six selfies of you in different angles don’t paint a picture, but a curated mix of moments from your life will help people learn more about you. Are you super close to your family? Throw in a family pic! Are you really into outdoor activities? Add a pic from one of your recent adventures! You get the idea – just put together a fun mix to help them get to know you beyond your looks.

3. Put something in your bio that actually interests you – opt for specifics rather than a summary of yourself

Bios are one of the hardest parts of making your profile. There’s so much pressure to be funny or interesting, and hitting the right tone can go a long way in turning the swipes in your favor. Instead of trying to tell people everything about you in that tiny little bio, opt for a few specifics that really help your personality shine. Plus, so many people will use something from your bio as a conversation starter, so make sure you include stuff you actually want to talk about! This is also a great way to test out compatibility and find common interests. If you’re a huge Harry Potter fan, include a quote from a book and see who gets the reference. If you’re really into a specific genre of music, share your favorite artist or song of the month and see who shares your interests!

4. Use the Dil Mil personality traits!

One of our favorite parts about the Dil Mil app is the label feature. These labels are an amazing way to quickly scan for compatibility and share things about yourself that are important to you, without taking up important real-estate in your bio. Don’t go too crazy, but pick the top 5-6 labels that you think are your best personality traits or things that you most strongly identify with, and add them to your profile!

5. Phone a friend – get a fresh POV on your profile

It’s not easy to be objective about your own profile. We all view ourselves differently, and oftentimes more critically, than our friends and family do. Call up a friend and have them look over your dating profile for you. That fresh point-of-view can do WONDERS in totally transforming your profile. Make sure you pick a friend that will tell you like it is – this isn’t the time for your kindest friend who always supports you with positive affirmations. This calls for the friend who will tell you when your breath smells like garlic or when your shoes don’t match your outfit. Even the smallest changes, like swapping out one pic for a cuter one, or double checking that the joke in your bio doesn’t come off as trying too hard, will help you make sure you’re showcasing the best version of yourself.
